How the main types of cover differ, what to check before buying, and what can happen when a Cambodian hospital needs payment for expensive treatment.
Which type might I need?
Designed mainly for an insured trip: emergency medical care, evacuation/repatriation and travel risks. Check trip-length, activity, age and pre-existing-condition rules.
Can cover a longer continuous journey, but still has a maximum duration and may not suit someone who has made Cambodia their permanent home.
International or Cambodian private cover can provide annual inpatient care, with outpatient, maternity, dental or evacuation benefits depending on the plan.
Four products, four different jobs
| Type | Usually intended for | Common strengths | Important limitations to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard holiday / travel | A defined trip from your home country. | Emergency illness or injury, evacuation or repatriation, plus cancellation, baggage and other travel benefits. | Maximum trip length; residence requirements; FCDO-advice exclusions; sports or motorbike exclusions; declared conditions. Not intended for permanent residence. |
| Long-stay travel | One extended trip, backpacking or temporary stay. | Longer continuous cover than a normal holiday policy; may retain travel-related benefits. | Still time-limited. Check work, return-home visits, one-way travel and whether cover ends when you become resident. |
| International / expat health | People living or working outside their home country. | Annual inpatient care; selectable geographic area; some plans offer outpatient, evacuation, maternity, dental and family cover. | Medical underwriting, exclusions, waiting periods, prior approval, deductibles and co-insurance. Travel cancellation and baggage may not be included. |
| Cambodian / local private | Cambodian residents wanting private medical cover. | Local administration and hospital networks; may offer direct billing and lower-cost regional choices. | Overseas treatment, evacuation, annual limits and portability vary greatly. Confirm whether the applicant and every dependant qualify. |
The emergency money question
A hospital may ask for a deposit or payment unless the insurer or its assistance company confirms cover and issues a guarantee of payment. A logo on a hospital list does not prove that every treatment, doctor or policy is cashless.
Royal Phnom Penh Hospital asks insured patients to verify benefits, says its third-party team reaffirms inpatient claim rights, and makes the patient responsible for excluded costs. William Russell says it normally settles inpatient bills directly but members generally pay for everyday outpatient treatment and claim reimbursement. Allianz says it settles most inpatient bills directly. Cigna requires prior authorisation for inpatient and day-patient treatment and offers in-network direct billing.
Provider comparison
These are current published features, not endorsements. Product names and availability can depend on residence, nationality and the entity issuing the policy. The policy schedule and full wording override marketing summaries.
| Provider / product | Published structure | Evacuation and payment | Geography, age and medical history |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cigna Global | Silver, Gold and Platinum core inpatient/day-patient plans; outpatient is optional. Deductible and cost-share choices are offered. | Evacuation/repatriation is an optional module. In-network direct billing is offered; inpatient/day-patient care requires prior authorisation. | Worldwide with or without USA. Cigna publishes no upper age limit, but pre-existing cover remains subject to plan benefits and underwriting terms. |
| William Russell | Bronze to Gold; inpatient across the range, with broader outpatient benefits on higher plans. Family policies and excess options are offered. | Medical evacuation is included, with stated limits; standard evacuation is to the nearest suitable hospital. Inpatient bills are normally settled directly; routine outpatient claims are generally reimbursed. | Regional and worldwide zones. Applications and pre-existing conditions are medically underwritten; eligibility and age must be confirmed for the applicant. |
| Allianz Care | Annual international health plans plus separate short-term cover; core inpatient/day-care with optional outpatient and deductibles. | Medical evacuation appears in plan benefits. Allianz says most inpatient bills are settled directly, subject to process and policy terms. | Worldwide, worldwide excluding USA and narrower areas are offered. Its current UK quote page says no new applicants over 75; pre-existing cover depends on accepted underwriting terms. |
| Bupa Global | International private medical plans for individuals and families; benefits vary by country of main residence and chosen plan. | Published benefits include global evacuation when needed treatment is unavailable locally. Pre-authorisation and facility-network rules apply. | International cover, limits and eligibility vary by residence and plan. Confirm USA treatment, age, deductibles and any condition-specific terms in writing. |
| IMG Global Medical | International major-medical plans with plan levels and deductible choices; treatment can be sought from a doctor or hospital, subject to the contract. | Benefits can include emergency evacuation. IMG's provider search marks facilities with direct-billing arrangements; other care may require payment and reimbursement. | Its published non-US option also excludes Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Singapore and Taiwan—important if Singapore treatment matters. Eligibility and pre-existing rules are plan-specific. |
| Forte Medi+ | Cambodia-based option for Cambodians and expatriates, with inpatient-only or inpatient-and-outpatient choices and optional maternity, dental and vision. | Publishes emergency evacuation and cashless options at network hospitals; non-network treatment uses a reimbursement claim process. | Areas range from Cambodia/nearby countries to worldwide. Forte says some pre-existing cover may be available, but the asterisk and full wording matter. |
| SAFETYNET / Dara | Cambodia-resident private and family hospitalisation plans. The family product currently requires at least four members. | Publishes direct billing and emergency evacuation. Its hospital page warns overseas outpatient direct billing is unavailable and some overseas care must be paid then reclaimed. | Private plan entry age is currently 60; family plan says no age limit and minimal pre-existing restrictions. Both require careful benefit-table and wording checks. |
Prices: We found no reliable, comparable public Cambodia tariff across these insurers. Premiums are individually calculated from age, residence, family size, cover area, benefits, deductible and medical history. Happy Cambodia has therefore not published invented “from” prices. Request written, like-for-like quotations on the same date and compare the total annual cost, not only the monthly headline.
A lower-cost structure
For someone with enough savings and predictable routine needs, a higher deductible or inpatient/catastrophic plan—while paying ordinary consultations and medicines personally—can reduce insured benefits and may reduce the premium. Cigna, Allianz and William Russell all publish deductible or excess choices; Forte publishes inpatient-only options.
It is a risk trade-off, not a universal recommendation. You must be able to fund the full deductible, co-insurance, excluded outpatient care and any hospital deposit immediately. A severe event just below an inpatient definition, repeated outpatient diagnostics, cancer drugs, chronic care or an excluded condition can be expensive.
Couples and children
Potentially, yes. International insurers publish family options, and Cambodia-based products such as Forte Medi+ are marketed to Cambodians and expatriates. SAFETYNET's Cambodia-resident family plan is another example. But the applicant, spouse and each child must meet that policy's residence, dependency, age and underwriting rules.
A Cambodian family member may benefit from access to a private-hospital network, protection from a large inpatient bill, or regional treatment and evacuation—if those benefits are actually included.
